Last week the company found out that it had been nominated and selected for the 2018 Moxie Awards. "Simplicity drives Productivity" was the message being discussed around the table this past week at NNData Headquarters as the Washington, DC committee interviewed the leadership about our NNCompass software.
We talk a lot about giving users who aren’t technical easy access to machine learning and deep learning algorithms, all for the purpose of creating “Smart Data”. When talking to business users who are incredibly smart on data and their business problem sets that need answers, we’re finding out the following concept rings very true:
“It’s isn’t so much about Machine Learning, AI, or Deep Learning… It’s about creating Deep Value”.
Every now and then I have a chance to talk to someone about NNCompass. Nine times out of 10 it goes exceedingly well! That tenth time though, well, let’s just say I need to work on either my mastery of the vernacular, or… I need to do a better job of conveying its features up front. Usually at the end of the meeting, where I’ve just poured my heart and soul into describing NNCompass, which I’ll admit can be frantic and all over the map sometimes, they’ll hit me with this question… “so what exactly does NNCompass do”? At which point, I realize, I have gone way too far into the weeds… So, here’s my attempt at a mea culpa blog post, where I try and abstract a quick description of what NNCompass is, and what its core features are.
Your team of data analysts just spent two weeks churning data that your organization collected, and the culmination of their efforts has yielded a visualization or two. Sure, ok, you have the “A Team” of data scientists and analysts, so they managed to produce three solid visualizations and two reports to provide answers to the leaderships’ toughest questions.
We’re all incredibly excited about launching NNCompass to the general public, and we’ve been working hard on a new nndata.com website to hopefully, and effectively, convey all the things NNCompass could do for you and your business.
We’re launching a product soon called NNCompass. It’s amazing. I’m completely in love with it. I have all these things to say about it, which vaguely resemble marketing copy (if I knew how to write that appropriately, and I do not). When I give a demonstration of NNCompass I can sound hyperbolic, and I have a hard time concealing my excitement for everything it can do. Sometimes the audience maybe leans back slightly in their chairs, or display any number of signals that could possibly indicate … well, caution, I guess might be the right word. I like to think it’s disbelief in what they’re seeing. Our COO, Lori Alexander, is always telling me to take a moment and breathe when I am talking about NNCompass. I can apparently talk for 15 minutes without coming up for air, which I realize isn’t optimal for people on the receiving end of that 15 minutes, like for instance when they have a question… I continue to be amazed at what the engineering team has built at NNData.
But I feel like I’m in a solid place, simply because I love NNCompass. It isn’t so much the fact that I had a hand in building and ideating it… it is belief. A true, and almost fanatical belief, that NNCompass can and will have a major impact on a large group of users and the data management, data wrangling, data integration, data streaming and the AI & machine learning (or what we like to refer to as “Smart Data” here at NNData) communities.
Never underestimate someones desire to be part of something though. Something great. I underestimated my desire to be part of a team creating a product that I think is changing an industry built around data management, the out-of-control costs associated with having to hire large data engineering teams with expertise in big data implementations, just so that you can ingest data and run an analytic or machine learning job against the data… How many people, how much time, and how big of a budget would you have needed to execute against that last sentence in 2017?
So instead of starting a blog about the advancements in machine learning and implications of AI, which I was going to name “Should I Say Thank You to Siri?”, I’m going to be talking a lot about a new system coming mid-July 2018 called NNCompass. You’re going to love it.
